Foolproof Guide to Gap Years

  1. Do your research; look at our list of organisations who cater specifically for people aiming to take time out and make sure you check their credentials.
  2. Talk to the admissions people at the place you want to study. That way you'll know for sure if they are happy for you to defer.
  3. Take a trip to your first and second university choices. Talk to other students and lecturers who have been there and done that to get ideas on what might be best for you.
  4. Get guidance from your personal tutor/a tutor you can trust to ensure you are doing the deferment process by the book.
  5. If you don't want to apply until after you know your results make sure you stay in contact with your college. Choose someone who you know will be happy to send you the UCAS forms, even if you are based in little-known-town, Remotesville.
  6. Got any big brothers of sisters? Talk to their mates to see if they have done the same thing.
  7. Don't leave it to chance, taking a break from study can take more time to plan than going straight to university.
  8. Don't panic. Trust us, you are going to have fun!
