Working Abroad

Going overseas to work or study is a big step. But it can be a great experience and there are now lots of ways of going about it. Whether you’re thinking of a spot of grape picking for the summer or something more long term – start here!

Working in Europe
If you are a UK National you don’t need a visa or work permit to get a job in another EU country. And there’s plenty of information available eg: The European Employment Section (EURES) has information and advice about job opportunities - see www.europa.eu.int/jobs/eures
Careers Europe produce facts sheets and a jobs information database - www.careerseurope.co.uk

Working Outside Europe
Finding work outside the EU can be a bit more complicated as you may need a visa and/or work permit. The regulations vary and you should contact the embassy of the country concerned for details.

Temporary Work
This may be for you if you don’t want to move abroad permanently. Job opportunities include the holiday industry, agricultural work, au pairing or teaching English as a foreign language.

Also, many pubishers publish a range of books that are full of other ideas and addresses eg:

Summer Jobs abroad
Look out for these in your careers library.

Voluntary Work
This is popular with gap year students but it can also be something you do once you’ve established yourself in a career – skills and professional qualifications eg: in teaching, nursing, engineering are always in demand.

Always check out the money angle – some projects expect you to fund yourself.
